“Vogliamo anche le rose” by Alina Marazzi presented by Vanessa Roghi

PERSPECTIVES ON ITALIAN CINEMA AND FEMINISM

We begin with Alina Marazzi and Vogliamo anche le rose (We Want Roses Too), a film that, almost twenty years after its release, continues to speak to us through a look at the past that illuminates our present.

Film in Italian with English Subtitles

Through diaries, archival footage, photographs, music, and animation, Marazzi tells the story of the profound changes that transformed women’s lives in Italy during the 1960s and ’70s: the body, sexuality, motherhood, family, work, desire, and freedom.

But above all, she tells the story of feminism through the words and images of those who lived it, turning the personal into a political narrative.

That is why it felt like the perfect film to open Perspectives on Italian Cinema and Feminism, the new film series at SULLALUNA in New York.

After the screening, we’ll discuss the film together with Vanessa Roghi, Italian historian and independent researcher specializing in the history of culture and education. She is currently a Tiro a Segnio Visiting Fellow in Italian American Studies at NYU.
